STAR Interview practice/questions
The question I chose for my mock interview was "what is your greatest strength?" and I talked about my 2nd year multi camera project and how I was able to solve a syncing problem which was all fine because I used the STAR system when it came to explaining.
When I started explaining what I did I explained when I did this project and where as it helps set the scene I also talked about how had the idea of backup saves of my projects prior to the syncing problem occurred to help save my project as without those saves I wouldn't have been able to finish the project.
But the feed back I received from the group was that maybe I used to much media jargon but in this situation it was great because of the situation I was in and the use of jargon helped in the explanation.
What I was told that was good was the idea of me creating a plan under pressure and also explaining what I learnt form the situation I explained.
What I could improve form this situation was that I should not be tense when talking as it seemed I was terrified and that it could give the wrong impression of me by accident.
Even though I used jargon a bit too much and was successful in doing it I should use a lot less just in case the interviewer doesn't get confused.
In conclusion I thought that the entire answer was good but I have realised that I need to layback on the use of jargon as it can end up being confusing towards the interviewer so note to self I need to lay off the jargon.
Training Video for interviews
The interview training video was a fun process as we planned our own video but then had to change the plans with another group and then make their video.
The making of the video I thought was a bit messy as we didn't have much time to create this video so we had to book out the interview rooms in the reception block of the college of west Anglia which was easy to do but when it came to filming in those rooms we realised the other groups had the same idea so we had to improvise an interview room in the media block, so what we did was us3e the front of Luke's room and use a two desk setup with all the lights off except a pair of LEDs that help cut out the crappy lighting provided by the room and the lines it would be present but irritating during the editing process.
Because the script was in a question and answer format we chose to shoot Mr smarts scenes first as his character required for both the interviewer and interviewee in suits and because we had a slim time frame we shot the interviewer saying all the questions and then the interviewee saying the answers in one go so we could just cut together the questions and answers in post so we could quickly change over to MR scruffs scenes as he was easy to shoot and so we could return the suits in time.
The suits were borrowed from the performing arts department as we didn't have suits ourselves and because of that we had to return them at 10 am that day as we started filming at 9 and so they can use them for their work so that created pressure for us to create this video and contributed to the sloppiness of our work and the edit as we were running out of time due to the deadline we had.
In conclusion the one lesson I would take away from this production is to work on my time management as that was the factor of the mismanagement of this project.
Dream Job Mock Interview
I thought the recording I took was awful the audio and questions and answers were fine but the problem I had was that I was aiming the camera at my feet which wasn't too helpful but I thought the use of STAR in my answers.
CV 2020
The new style for my cv is a massive improvement form my previous CV as it is more colourful and not as borinng as my previous CV.
Another positive form my CV since I created my first one at the start of year1 of this course I now have the ability to add new skills to my portfolio such as multi camera production skills such as Jam syncing and camera angles and camera positioning in the same sort of production I have also learnt from that production as I learnt how to sync edit for a multi camera production.
One of the many positives from creating an up to date CV is that it is easy to create an enticing and positive CV that would help catch the eyes of my possible future employers as well as showing my personalty through the design of my CV.
Overall the success of this task is to receive work through my now newly designed cv and only time will tell if I was successful or not but hopefully it helps show my personalty before meeting my future employers so overall this task I personally thought was a success.
Formal Letter
The task to complete for this section of the Progression Unit was to make either a real or fake formal letter to a potential employer in the film or tv industry.
my letter was addressed to Pinewood studios as it is one of the UKs major Film studios that have been used by companies such as the BBC, Netflix and sky just to name a few for the multiple productions through the next few years and the very near future, the reason I chose them is because they have an apprenticeship and training programme for college and university students who want to get involved in the industry by learning from their countless professionals in their respected professions such as editing lighting and cinematography.
The format for my letter was standard my address and contact details and pinewoods address and to whoever sold revive the letter, I then continued to sell myself to them as a college/university student who wants gain experience in the industry while studying for my degree in film and tv production at university and to help with that I would offer my self as a volunteer so if they didn't like me they don't have to pay me and I they did they could employ me there after the apprenticeship.
The language I used in the letter was in a formal tone addressing the letter to sir/madam just in case someone form the male and or female gender received my letter so I didn't anger them by mispronouncing their title in the industry.
What I think I could improve on in my letter for potential future drafts is that I could add some idea of experience I have had while at college so that they know I'm not just walking onto a set not knowing anything but showing I know something atlas might present myself a capable apprentice/trainee.
From completing this task I have realised the best thing that could come from sending a letter than form sending an email, 1 it shows you have taken time to write a letter to them and 2 they are forced to open the letter as they don't know the contents until they open it and read it with an email they can just ignore you.
Overall I think formal letters will become a permanent addition to my work cycle.
TELEPHONE SKILLS
The task for this section was that to do a short phone call with another member of the group and use formal phone language in this call.
What I did was my friend Lewis was phoning me a Nike Factory shop worker about his delivery get had orders and was wondering if it has arrivd at the store yet.
During this phone call I performed well in the simulated environment as well as using the smile technigue so you sound more positive and confident on the phone so the customer can feel at ease during the call.
The one thing I didn't do was give my full name and ask lewis if I could call him Lewis instead of mr Hawthorne so I could establish a more friendly connection with each other .
After the phone call I thought about the call and pointed out to myself that I didn't establish that friendly connection and that could be the factor to a good or a bad phone call.
In conclusion this task has been a positive reminder to myself to always focus on my formal and personal language when talking to a stranger so I could try and make them a friend.
Personal statement
The task of creating a personal statement was lame of the hardest tasks I ever had to complete as it was basically summing up myself in a few hundred words and thats terrifying .
Summing up my life and skills in just a few words have helped me realise that I need to get some more experience relating to the media industry such as springboard tv or volunteering for a media production company just so I could add more media related skills to my personal statement as by learning this skills I could be seen as a qualified potential student to the university's I have chosen.
The reason I talk alot about me sounding interesting to the university I have chosen, it's because that's what my top choice wants to see in their students and my top uni is Manchester Film school.
The one thing the interviewer wants for his course is a group of people that are unique in their own way and can be put with other unique students to make some of the best pieces of media, Due to this quality has looking for I have realised that by going out there finding some new experiences and skills maybe I can be seen as more unique in person as well as on paper.
Writing my personal statement has affected me more than I thought it would it has taught me it's not the grades that help you stand out it's the experiences the skills and your personality that makes your unique on paper but more importantly in life and at work.
SHOWREEL
Creating a showreel is basically presenting yourself through the work you have done that is related to the media industry.
For me this task gave me the freedom to have complete control over creative decisions and length of the showreel the only factor in had to stick to is that it had to be at least a minute in length.
What I loved about this task is that it gave me the chance to show off the work I have done in the past 2 years and that i could go back and fix some shots for the reel such as one of my shots from my FMP from my first year at college.
The clip was part of an interviewer I had with a fisherman for my shell fishing documentary that I created for my FMP, the problem I had with it was that back then I couldn't colour correct for the life of me ut now since then I have practiced and have improved my skills so that now I can fix my mess I created a year ago and as a personal note it looks much better as my subject doesn't look like a tangerine anymore which is great.
But what would of made this section so much better is that I could cut the shot in half having a before and after section after me re-colour correcting the footage as that would help show off my skills to my potential employers.
One of the major factors for my showreel is that I created it in 3 hours even though I had 3 weeks to do it , the reason why it took so long to create is that the equipment we are provided by the college wouldn't work to its created purpose as it crashed my premier pro project multiple times causing me to restart my project multiple times and wasting my time.
What would help me in the future is that I find a mac that works properly before starting a project at all.
What this showreel task has taught me that by making showreel like this can help you reflect on your past projects and help bring them to light although they have been forgotten and yeah some of the clips are not some of your best work but you can try and amend and improve them by going through this process.
My Personal Evaluation
This project as a whole contained alot of personal reflection on ones actu8ns and experiences that will eventually create your future.
What I can say my mindset has definitely changed after dissecting my worry bus is that I was and still kind of am a self doubter as whenever someone encourages me or gives me a compliment I always find some way to shoot myself down.
But after looking at mymworry bus and creating my showreel o have discovered some sort of new found confidence when it comes to my capibilitys and skills as both a person and a media creator.
Overall I have become a more positive and relaxed person after completing the tasks related to the progression unit and that I believe I have the capability to achieve a merit and maybe even a distinction in my FMP and that is my aim to get that at the end of this year.
When I started explaining what I did I explained when I did this project and where as it helps set the scene I also talked about how had the idea of backup saves of my projects prior to the syncing problem occurred to help save my project as without those saves I wouldn't have been able to finish the project.
